Solo travel is incredibly rewarding. You’re forced to get out of your comfort zone and introduce yourself to new people if you want travel buddies or new friends. You’re also forced to make decisions on the fly, and you’ll quickly find yourself why you haven’t travelled solo in the past- especially when you get to choose your entire week’s itinerary all by yourself.
Here are some of the best European countries for solo travel:
Portugal
Even the large cities like Porto and Lisbon aren’t intimidating in Portugal. But, the public transport puts most other countries to shape- they’re inexpensive, simple, and easy to use. Not to mention, locals are respectful and friendly, with warm personalities to go with the warm climates. Even the winters are nice and mild in Portugal, so you can travel any time of the year.
Portugal is also a country that’s easy to manage- you can easily take a bunch of day trips from the big cities to find beautiful beaches, fishing towns, and palaces.
The Netherlands
For some reason, most travellers only think of Amsterdam when they think of the Netherlands. But there’s so much more to do here than get high in Amsterdam. This is a liberal, peaceful country that’s incredibly easy to get around, and basically created for solo travel. Check out Rotterdam, which is the biggest port in Europe and a super cool, underrated city. Once you get out of the big cities (enjoy wifi on the trains), you’ll be charmed by the Dutch countryside. Check out Giethoorn, which is known as the Venice of Holland, and get your camera ready for the many windmills in the countryside.
Croatia
There’s so much to love about Croatia, and so many inland attractions and islands to explore. You may even want to get a small group tour so you can meet other travellers as you check out the national parks and UNESCO Heritage Sites. Along with recently-popular Dubrovnik, the cobbled streets in Split, and the pubs and clubs in Hvar, you’ll enjoy many different coastal towns and of course, the capital Zagreb.
United Kingdom
There’s so much to see and do in the United Kingdom, it’s easy to see why so many visitors from the Commonwealth choose to move over for their two-year Working Holiday Visas. Of course, London is a must-visit with its numerous attractions (click here for some of the best) But Edinburgh, Glasgow, and St Andrews are also excellent weekend trips.
