Transport in London

Taxi:

In London, two kinds of taxis can be found running on the streets, one is of course the black cab and the other minicab also known as private hire cars. The Black cab’s license means that they can pick up passengers off the street when hailed down or flagged.

Minicabs on the other hand are private hire cars that have to be pre-booked or hired in advance before the actual journey. The rates are fixed for destinations which makes them a much more efficient means of travel as the passenger doesn’t have to pay extra if he gets stuck in traffic. Another thing that makes them a more demanded means of transportation is that they are usually cheaper to hire than a conventional taxi and are best when looking for a comfortable and luxurious ride.

Taxi fare comparison websites

As the taxi business in London started to boom and the private hire industry took over the black cabs, competition rose and websites like Minicabit.com surfaced. What these websites do is offer route details and fare calculations within seconds once a user enters his initial and final location. In addition, these websites also offer information about the best cab services in London.

Bus:

Like Hackney carriages, the red buses in London also enjoy an iconic stature. Where tubes can’t fill all the gaps, the red buses are there to offer the best substitute. Bus travel is very cheap as compared to other means of conveyance in London with an abundance of many sightseeing opportunities when seated on the top section of the double-decker bus. Due to this very reason, an estimate of five million bus trips are made weekly covering 700+ bus routes which makes it much easier to find one than a Tube.

Tube:

The tube also known as the London Underground is the main transportation means for Londoners. The network comprising of 12 lines is sufficient to get you to tour London on the whole. Tickets can be purchased in advance or directly collected from the ticket barriers on the platforms. Despite the fact that the tube does get delayed, it is still the fastest way to see London.

Rail:

Known as the National Rail, the British railway system in London is operated by many private companies but with tight government contacts and are usually seen running on the southern side of the city. If you are on a sightseeing vacation, the rail is not for you as it lies away from all the best tourist destinations London has to offer. London doesn’t believe in the central station concept when it comes to the Rail as twelve different mainline stations around central London are where the rails can be seen running on.
