Why I Love Traveling in Latin America

There’s something special about Latin America. Whether you’re ready to go for the first time, or looking forward to going back, Latin America encompasses a large region with many cultures, and yet there are so many unique reasons to visit each country. If you’re considering taking a tour through the region, be sure to check out TrekAmerica.

Here are just a few reasons why I love travelling in Latin America:

Nature

For anyone who likes to get outdoors, you’ll be spoiled in Latin America. From volcanoes, to Machu Picchu, Iguazu Falls, the Galapagos Islands to the scuba diving, hiking, caving, windsurfing, canoeing, surfing, and snorkelling, there’s something for everyone here.

History

Not only does the history date back hundreds of years, but Latin American countries are recognising that travellers are interested in authentic experiences while traveling, and indigenous groups are creating tourism projects which are community-based.

Food

Each country has unique dishes, but Latin American food is known to be filling, relatively healthy, and delicious. Be sure to try ceviche, tamales and barbecue.

People

Latin Americans are warm, welcoming, and will help you if you need it. They’re patient and willing to talk to you- regardless of your level of Spanish, and are usually curious about your home country. People are touchy-feely, and you’ll find yourself doing plenty of cheek-kissing, embracing and occasionally getting your cheeks pinched by your elders. You’ll also soon learn that in Latin America, people are relaxed, pay little attention to road rules, and don’t believe in sticking to strict schedules. It’s best to go with it.

Language

Spanish can be tricky for foreigners to learned, especially if you haven’t had much experience with languages. But the good news is that you’ll find plenty of language skills and private teachers available to teach you the basics. You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to practice as most people won’t speak English- great news if you’re committed to improving your Spanish.

Architecture

With so many cathedrals, churches, and colonial towns, photographers will be in heaven. There are walking tours in many cities with guides who can teach you about the history of the region, or you can simply wander through the towns and cities yourself.

Markets

Latin American markets are full of everything from meat, fruit and vegetables, to clothes, homewares and electronics. And since bartering is expected, you’ll be able to eat healthily for a steal.

Parties

Whether you can dance salsa or prefer to watch, you’ll find that the clubbing in Latin America is amazing. Towns with curfews will have fun afterparties, and you’ll be able to relax and practice your Spanish in cosy, intimate bars, or dance on tables at well-known clubs throughout the region.

Convinced yet? Many people are worried about travelling through Latin America, and worry that it will be dangerous, but the large majority of travellers leave the region with fun stories to tell and a desire to go back as soon as they can.
